The peninsula of Methana is a region of intensive volcanic activity with about 30 extinct lava domes. In 238 BC a volcano, known as 'historic volcano', erupted near Kameni Chora, which was also observed in Athens, 50 km away. There are ancient reports of this event by Ovid, Strabon and Pausanias. - Isn't it remarkable that 'volcano' in Greek is 'Ephaistio', referring to the ancient god? |
